Chillicothe boys grind out ten-point win at Cameron Tournament

It was not necessarily the prettiest game that Tim Cool’s team has played this season, but the Chillicothe Hornets were successful in moving into the semifinals of the Cameron Tournament, with the two-seed beating Excelsior Springs on Tuesday night, 54-44.  Twenty-five of the Hornets points came from the free throw line, with Adler Marshall leading the winning side with 13 points while Westley Brandsgaard added 12.  Next up for the Hornets will be the Lawson Cardinals, who survived a late-night test by the host Cameron Dragons, winning a tight affair 52-50.  The Cardinals meeting with the Hornets will be 8:30 on Thursday night.

The Maryville boys have the top seed in the Cameron Tournament, and won their opener, 67-53 against the Smithville Warriors.  The Spoofhounds semifinal (7 PM Thursday) opponent is MEC rival Bishop LeBlond, a 55-47 winner last night over Higginsville.

The girls consolation semifinals and championship semifinals are set for tonight (Wednesday night) at Cameron High School, with LeBlond playing Higginsville at 4, and Cameron against Excelsior Springs at 5:30 in consolation round action.  The girls championship semifinals will feature the Savannah Lady Savages against Lawson at 7, followed by Chillicothe battling Maryville at 8:30.

The Keytesville Tournament continued with four games on Tuesday night.  The Norborne Lady Pirates routed Brunswick 83-17 while the Higbee girls claimed a decisive win over Bevier, 65-20.  In boys finals, Brunswick downed #6 seed Bevier, 64-34, while Keytesville took a 70-55 victory over Higbee.  

In the consolation semifinals at Keytesville on Wednesday night, the girls match-ups will be Keytesville against Bunceton at 4:30 and Brunswick opposite Bevier at 7 o’clock.  The boys consolation semifinals start at 5:45 with Bunceton against Higbee.  The Norborne boys battle Bevier at 8:15.

The Mid-Buchanan girls and boys, both seeded #1 at the North Platte Tournament, took wins on Tuesday night over West Platte, with the girls final 57-20, and the Dragon boys winning 49-36.  Plattsburg and Northland Christian split quarterfinals from Dearborn, with the Plattsburg girls falling 49-40, but the Plattsburg boys finding the win column, 74-57.

In Wednesday night’s consolation semifinals from North Platte, West Platte’s girls challenge Plattsburg at 4:30, followed by the West Platte boys against Mound City at 5:45.  The second girls game of the night will feature the Polo Lady Panthers against North Platte, with the North Platte boys hosting Northland Christian at 8:15.

At the King City Tournament, the GRC Western Division champion Stanberry Lady Bulldogs overwhelmed Stewartsville on Tuesday night, 91-9, while the North Andrew Lady Cardinals claimed a 50-18 win over South Holt.  In the girls consolation semifinals tonight, Stewartsville plays Maysville at 4:30, while South Holt and Albany battle at 7:30.

In the boys finals from King City on Tuesday night, South Holt downed Stewartsville 61-31, North Andrew was a 74-44 victor over DeKalb, while Stanberry claimed a 59-42 win over Albany.  The boys consolation semifinals will feature DeKalb and Maysville at 6, with Albany and Stewartsville playing at 9 o’clock.

In a boys basketball Top 10 Class 1 showdown on Tuesday night, St. Joseph Christian (#9) beat #5 ranked Winston 64-48, as the Lions move to 16-3 on the season.  Winston suffered its second loss of the campaign, falling to 15-2, as Jacob Lewis had 22 points and Cy Uthe 18. The Lions have a showdown looming for the GRC West title with #2 ranked North Andrew, with that game to be played at 7:30 on Tuesday, January 30th at the “Lions Den” in St. Joseph.
