The Kansas City Chiefs added another dramatic chapter to their winning streak Sunday, beating the Denver Broncos 16-14 on Leo Chenal’s walk-off block of Wil Lutz’s 35-yard field goal attempt as time expired.
Chenal, a Chiefs linebacker, penetrated the center of Denver’s field goal unit to deflect Lutz’s kick, securing Kansas City’s 15th consecutive victory dating to last season.
“It’s a complete shock,” Chenal said. “I was really praying for something to happen.”
Coach Andy Reid credited preparation and execution. “We took advantage of something we saw in their field-goal operation. We work on it like crazy.”
Patrick Mahomes threw for 266 yards and a touchdown, while Travis Kelce added eight catches for 64 yards and a score. The Chiefs became the fifth Super Bowl champion to start the next season 9-0.
Bo Nix led Denver with 215 yards passing and two touchdowns.
Coach Sean Payton said, “We outplayed them, but didn’t finish.”
The Chiefs face Buffalo next Sunday, while Denver plays Atlanta.
