After missing most of training camp with concussion issues, running back Charcandrick West was released by the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday morning. The move is expected to save Kansas City $1.65 million on the salary cap. West’s time, if he stayed in K.C. for 2018, would undoubtedly have been more limited, with Kareem Hunt establishing himself as the franchise’s top running back, followed by back-up Spencer Ware, and the offseason additions of Damien Wlliams, undrafted rookie Darrel Williams, and backup Kerwynn Williams.
In 2015, West had his best year as a Chief, replacing the injured Jamaal Charles with a 160 carry, four touchdown, 634 yard season. Last season, his numbers had slipped to 18 carries and 72 yards, with two touchdowns in 13 games of work.
Kansas City’s third game of the preseason will be played on Saturday in Chicago against the NFC North Bears, with kickoff at Soldier Field set for 12 noon.
