The Kansas City Chiefs’ formula for success may have looked different Sunday, with their defense and running game leading the way. However, the result was familiar: another victory, this time 28-18 over the San Francisco 49ers.
Patrick Mahomes overcame two interceptions to make crucial plays with his feet, helping the Chiefs remain the NFL’s only undefeated team.
“It’s not just about me; it’s about playing team football,” Mahomes said. “We have a great running game and defense, and we’re executing when it counts.”
The Chiefs (6-0) ran for a season-high 184 yards, with four rushing touchdowns for the first time since the 2018 playoffs. Their defense intercepted 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy three times.
Mahomes’ best plays came without throwing. He scrambled 33 yards, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run.
“He’s a playmaker,” said Kareem Hunt, who ran for two scores. “He makes plays with his arm or legs.”
The Chiefs have now beaten the 49ers five straight times, including two Super Bowls.
San Francisco (3-4) suffered a potentially significant loss: star receiver Brandon Aiyuk may have torn his ACL.
“We didn’t do anything well on offense,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.
Mahomes finished 16 for 27 with 154 yards passing and eight interceptions this season. Coach Andy Reid praised his team’s adaptability.  “We have room to improve,” Reid said. “Guys are stepping up, and others trust them.”
The Chiefs visit Las Vegas next Sunday, while the 49ers host Dallas.
