Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl winning quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Len Dawson has entered hospice care, it was reported Friday night by Dawson’s broadcasting employer, KMBC-TV, where he began a broadcasting career in 1966 while still quarterbacking the Chiefs. KMBC verified the information on Dawson’s condition through his wife Linda.
Dawson, in January 1970, won the Chiefs first Super Bowl championship, as he was named MVP of Kansas City’s 23-7 win over Minnesota in Super Bowl IV. He was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987, and through his broadcasting accolades, earned the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award in 2012.
Dawson played collegiately at Purdue University, and after struggling to find roster traction with the Steelers and Browns in five seasons in the NFL, joined the Dallas Texans of the newly-founded AFL in 1962, moving with that franchise to Kansas City the following season. Dawson is 87 years of age.
