The Kansas City Chiefs rode solid quarterback play from the trio of Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne, and Shane Buechele, while the defense held a short-handed Arizona Cardinals offense in check, in a 17-10 preseason victory on Friday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Both Henne and Buechele threw for touchdown strikes, while Mahomes, in his most extensive work of the preseason to date, was 10 of 18 for 78 yards. The Texas Tech did not throw a touchdown pass and was intercepted once.
Harrison Butker opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal that ended a 15-play drive engineered by Mahomes that stalled in the red zone. On Kansas City’s second possession of the night, also a 15-play jaunt, Byron Murphy Jr. picked off a Mahomes pass in the end zone. Henne, the veteran back-up from the University of Michigan, was 6 for 8 for 82 yards, while the rookie Buechele, a product of Southern Methodist University, was a solid 9 or 11 for 115 yards. Byron Pringle shined for the Chiefs offense with four catches for 63 yards.
Here is Head Coach Andy Reid:
Safety Juan Thornhill snuffed out an Arizona drive late in the first half with a diving interception.
For Arizona, starting quarterback Kyler Murray was just 1 for 4 for 2 yards, with eight yards rushing, failing to gain a first down in his brief first-quarter appearance. Colt McCoy saw much more extended play for the Cardinals, going 13 of 18 for 113 yards and the Thornhill interception.
The Chiefs finish up preseason play with a visit to Arrowhead Stadium by the Minnesota Vikings on Friday night, August 27th, with Arizona traveling to New Orleans for a meeting with the Saints on Saturday, August 28th.
