Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice may be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury sustained in Sunday’s 17-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Rice was carted off the field with his right knee in a brace after a bizarre play in which he was hit by quarterback Patrick Mahomes while pursuing Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton during an interception return.
Coach Andy Reid expressed concern about the severity of the injury, citing the need for an MRI on Monday.
“I’m sure it’s not as good of news as we want,” Reid said. “I feel terrible for Rashee because he is having a fantastic year.”
Mahomes described the incident as unintentional, stating he was attempting to tackle Fulton.
Rice, the Chiefs’ leading receiver, has 24 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns this season. His potential absence could elevate rookie Xavier Worthy, who had three catches for 73 yards and a touchdown on Sunday.
Worthy acknowledged the team’s “next man up” mentality, saying, “We have a lot of guys that can make plays in key moments.”
Rice faces pending charges related to a high-speed crash in Texas last March. His status will be updated after the MRI results are revealed.
