The Kansas City Chiefs secured their ninth consecutive AFC West title Sunday, defeating the Los Angeles Chargers 19-17.
Matthew Wright’s 31-yard field goal as time expired proved to be the game-winner, clanging off the left upright before going through. Wright’s kick capped a 4 1/2-minute drive led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The victory marked the Chiefs’ 15th straight win in one-score games over the last two seasons. Kansas City (12-1) also improved to 10-0 this season in one-score games.
Mahomes was 21 of 30 for 213 yards, and Justin Herbert countered with 213 yards passing and a touchdown for the Chargers (8-5).
The Chargers opened the second half with a 13-play, 79-yard drive that concluded with Gus Edwards’ 3-yard touchdown run. Los Angeles took a 14-13 lead later in the quarter on Herbert’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Johnson.
Wright’s third field goal, from 50 yards, put the Chiefs back in front before Cameron Dicker’s 37-yard field goal gave the Chargers a 17-16 lead with 4:35 remaining.
Mahomes then engineered the game-winning drive, highlighted by a third-and-10 conversion to Xavier Worthy and a scrambling throw to Travis Kelce that allowed the Chiefs to run the clock down to zero.
The Chiefs have now had three different kickers make a game-winning field goal as time expired this season, an NFL first.
