The Kansas City Chiefs anticipate the participation of wide receiver Kadarius Toney and running back Isiah Pacheco in their regular season opener against the Detroit Lions.
“From the organizational perspective, we hold a positive outlook regarding the readiness of these individuals for gameplay, barring any unforeseen setbacks,” stated general manager Brett Veach. “Our assessment is that we’re currently well-positioned concerning both of these players.”
Toney sustained a meniscus tear during the Chiefs’ inaugural training camp practice, leading to subsequent surgical intervention. As of now, he has not resumed active participation in practice sessions.
Pacheco underwent surgical procedures on his hand and shoulder during the offseason. Throughout training camp, his involvement has been limited in practice, and he awaits medical clearance for full-contact engagement.
Optimism surrounds Toney’s potential impact, having been acquired from the New York Giants midway through the previous season. He played a pivotal role in the Chiefs’ triumph in Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles, contributing a touchdown in the fourth quarter and facilitating another with a 65-yard punt return.
As a rookie, Pacheco emerged as the Chiefs’ primary rushing leader in the prior season. His performance included a 76-yard rushing achievement and a touchdown in the Super Bowl.
Parallel to these developments, the Chiefs have conducted training camp sessions without the presence of prominent pass rusher Chris Jones. Jones faces daily fines amounting to $50,000 for his absence from practices, as he seeks renegotiation of his contract terms. Remaining in the last year of his four-year agreement inked in 2020, Jones is currently engaged in contract discussions.
“As for the timetable of resolution, I am unable to provide a definitive answer,” Veach clarified. “No notions or considerations regarding a trade are in motion. Our focus remains directed at achieving an accord. Given that the initial game is scheduled for September 7, this provides us with a positive context. Chris possesses familiarity with our scheme from multiple seasons, and his commitment to physical conditioning is commendable. We are committed to persisting in our negotiations with the aim of reaching a successful outcome.”
