The Kansas City Chiefs have made a notable addition to their practice squad, signing former New England Patriots wide receiver Tyquan Thornton. The 2022 second-round pick was released by the Patriots despite their lack of depth at the position.
To make room for Thornton, the Chiefs parted ways with longtime organization member Cornell Powell. Powell, a 2021 fifth-round draft pick out of Clemson, spent most of his Chiefs career on the practice squad or inactive.
Powell played just three offensive snaps and 28 special teams snaps in three games in 2022. Although he seemed to have favor within the organization as a trusted scout team participant and meeting room contributor, the Chiefs continue to seek viable offensive weapons.
Powell returned to the Chiefs’ offseason roster after their Super Bowl win but missed the 53-man roster cut. He rejoined the practice squad on October 22 following Rashee Rice’s season-ending injury.
If the Chiefs need depth at wide receiver or suffer another injury, Powell may be considered again. He could also return for training camp ahead of the 2025 season, though his game-day potential appears limited.
Thornton, the 50th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, joins the Chiefs’ practice squad. His addition bolsters the team’s receiving corps, which already features Skyy Moore, selected just four picks after Thornton.
