AFC West rivals Los Angeles and Kansas City will open Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” package in Week #2 of the National Football League season, on September 15th at Arrowhead Stadium.
Amazon is paying the NFL $1 billion per season to carry game broadcasts for the next 11 years, including 15 regular season and one preseason contest. Games will be available in the participating team’s markets, a practice that has been in place for several years involving games on ESPN and NFL Network.
The Amazon Prime Video package will be announced by Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit. The complete schedule of Thursday night games will be announced on Thursday, May 12th.
The Chiefs and the Chargers are no strangers to meeting in prime-time, with the duel between young quarterbacks Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes bring extra-sizzle to the long-time rivalry that dates back to the days of the AFL in the 1960s. In 2021, the Chiefs beat Los Angeles on Thursday night, 34-28 in overtime. The teams met on Thursday night in 2018, and in Mexico City for a Monday night game in 2019.
The only Thursday night games to not be aired on Amazon Prime Video will be the traditional season opener at the home of the reigning Super Bowl champion on NBC, and a to-be-announced Thanksgiving Night game, also on NBC. There will not be a Thursday game on the final week of the regular season, with two games on Saturday, and the other 14 on Sunday for that weekend.
