The Milan Wildcats, for one of the first times this season, were given a stiff challenge to their unbeaten record, playing the #3 seed Macon Tigers on Saturday night in the championship game of the Marceline Hoops Classic.
With the game on the line in the fourth quarter, the ‘Cats made just enough plays to earn the victory, 61-57, improving to 13-0 on the season, while dropping the Tigers to 4-7.
Sophomore Hunter Shaw paced the Wildcats attack with 15 points, while fellow sophomore Ryan Dabney, named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, added 12, and freshman Dominic Dabney 10 points. Macon had Jamison Hogsett with a game-high 23 points, with Max Schroeder contributing 16.
The championship at Marceline is the second of the season for Milan, going with the Novinger title earned in early December. Milan has the #1 seed for the annual Milan Tournament this week, with the Wildcats hosting Bucklin/Macon County on Tuesday night at 6 o’clock in opening round play.
The girls championship at Marceline was won by the Macon Tigerettes, 33-31 over the Glasgow Lady Yellowjackets. The win improves Macon to 10-3, while dropping Glasgow to 7-4. Megan Cashatt had 10 points for Macon, with Jaden Monnig leading Glasgow with 13.
