Less than 24 hours after Bo Bichette suffered a right knee injury during Monday’s game against the Orioles, the Toronto Blue Jays have acquired Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong in a trade. Minor League right-handed reliever Matt Svanson is going to the Cardinals in exchange for DeJong, with cash also involved in the deal.
This marks the third trade between Toronto and St. Louis, following previous acquisitions of relievers GĂ©nesis Cabrera and Jordan Hicks.
The Blue Jays had been in the market for a right-handed bat, and Bichette’s injury added urgency to their need. DeJong, who will soon turn 30, is currently batting .233 with a .710 OPS, 13 home runs, and 32 RBIs in the 2023 season. He is a former All-Star and NL Rookie of the Year runner-up, currently in his seventh MLB season. DeJong’s contract includes options for 2024 ($12.5 million; $2 million buyout) and 2025 ($15 million; $1 million buyout).
Svanson has been impressive in relief this season, posting a 1.11 ERA, 39 strikeouts, and a 0.93 WHIP over 32 1/3 innings.
To make room for DeJong on the active roster, the Blue Jays have designated Jordan Luplow for assignment.
