The rebuilding project endured for the last couple of seasons in the Tri-Rivers Conference with the girls basketball program at Milan is starting to bear fruit for the Lady Wildcats, as a 2-0 start to the 2016-2017 season has the Lady ‘Cats advanced into a semifinal at the Novinger Tournament, tonight (Wednesday night) against former conference foe Scotland County.

Behind 22 points from center Angelle Ziegler, Milan defeated Atlanta on Monday night (58-45), but the challenge against the Lady Tigers of SCHS is far more daunting.  Scotland County had little trouble in its quarterfinal victory over Newtown-Harris 77-4, and is coming off a trip to the Class 2 state quarterfinals last March.

The Milan-Scotland County contest tips at 6:40 from Novinger High School, with the winner playing at 3:20 Saturday in the girls championship game (loser into the third place game, Friday night at 8:10).  The other girls game tonight (Wednesday night) from NHS is a consolation semifinal, with Newtown-Harris taking on Atlanta.

The Milan boys, 1-1 to start the season, will be looking to rebound from Monday night’s nine point loss to Green City, playing Atlanta in a Wednesday night consolation semifinal at 8 o’clock.  The winner moves into the consolation final, Friday night at 6:50.

In a boys championship semifinal tonight, LaPlata plays #4 seed Green City at 5:20.

Scores from Tuesday night’s quarterfinal action from Novinger were:

(Girls) #2 Green City 71, #7 Brashear 24

(Boys) #2 Scotland County 70, #7 Newtown-Harris 21

(Girls) #3 LaPlata 61, #6 Novinger 44

(Boys) #3 Novinger 73, #6 Brashear 31
