The Trenton Bulldogs saw their record fall two games (5-7) below the .500 mark, falling to the Lathrop Mules in a road contest on Monday afternoon, 11-1. Trenton, despite scoring a fifth-inning run to break the shutout effort, failed to achieve a base hit in the game, called after five innings by run rule.
Avery Cooksey scored in the fifth inning for the Bulldogs, adding a stolen base in his trip around the bases, reaching via walk,
Lathrop received stalwart pitching from the combination of Carneal (starter) and Kirkland (reliever), with Carneal striking out nine Trenton Bulldogs in 4 1/3 innings of work, with Kirkland walking Jaren Whitney in finishing the game with 2/3rd’s of an inning of work. Whitney drove in Cooksey in the 5th for Trenton’s only RBI of the game.
The Mules broke open the game against Trenton starter Drew Rorebeck in the middle innings, with a single run in the 2nd to take the lead, followed by three runs in the third. Jesse Farmer pitched the 4th inning and gave up three runs, with Lathrop adding four runs in the 5th to end the contest.
Trenton showed improvement in multiple facets against the strong Mules team, particularly on defense, with only one error committed in the contest.
The Bulldogs will look to get back in the win column this (Tuesday) afternoon, traveling to Purdin to battle the Linn County Mustangs. First pitch is slated for 5 o’clock.
