Last week, the Trenton Bulldog boys tennis team traveled to Kirksville, where the Tigers ended the Bulldogs unbeaten run in duals, beating Trenton 5-4. Despite the disappointment of the loss, Trenton knew they would get another shot at Kirksville, this time on Senior Night at Trenton High School.
The Bulldogs took full advantage of the Senior Night atmosphere, overwhelming the Tigers in an 8-1 rout. The win improves Trenton to 8-1 on the season, while dropping Kirksville to 10-4.
Three Trenton players won their varsity singles matches by 8-1 scores, with Nick Shields, Kade Ockenfels, and Gabe Swann accomplishing that feat. Wyatt Neal won 8-5, while Jeremy Elliott claimed an 8-2 win. Kirksville’s only victory in the match came at #4 singles, with Noah Walker downing Creed Houghton 8-3.
The Bulldogs were even more dominant in doubles, as Houghton teamed with Ockenfels for an 8-1 win at #2 doubles, while the #1 doubles squad of Shields and Swann rolled by an 8-1 score. Neal and Elliott, at #3 doubles, were nearly as strong, winning 8-2.
Kirksville and Trenton played five JV matches on Monday night, four of the doubles variety, with the Tigers winning all five competitions.
Trenton, after honoring its seniors (Ockenfels, Neal, and Colten Hamilton), will take on the Cameron Dragons on Tuesday night on the road, then have the Benton Tournament in St. Joseph, the final tune-up matches before postseason begins.
