The Trenton Bulldog tennis team traveled south to Chillicothe on Tuesday afternoon, meeting the rival Hornets after dominating CHS in head-to-head competition on Thursday and Friday at the Kirksville Tournament.
The trend for the Bulldogs against Chillicothe continued, with Trenton sweeping doubles, and winning 4 of 6 singles matches in a 7-2 road win, moving the Bulldogs record in head-to-head duals this spring to 3-1. Â Chillicothe’s only varsity triumphs over the visitors from THS came in tie-breaker fashion. Â Tyler Maasdam, in a thrilling match with Wyatt Neal at #4 singles, won an 8-6 tiebreak after the two young men battled to an 8-8 finish. Â In a similar match at #5 singles, the Hornets Nicholas Malloy won a tiebreak over Creed Houghton 7-5, after the two finished 8-8.
The other singles matches were not as tight, with Trenton’s #3 player, Kade Ockenfels, winning 8-1 over Chillicothe’s Dalton Rosenbach, while Nick Shields (#1 singles) and Gabe Swann (#6 singles) won by identical scores of 8-2 (over Max Anderson and Bryce Larson respectively). Â At #2 singles, Jacob Davis of THS beat Jacob Henington of CHS 8-5.
Doubles was fairly competitive, but Trenton was able to, on average, win 2 of every 3 games played against Chillicothe to take the 3-match sweep. Â The Bulldogs #1 team of Shields and Davis combined for an 8-4 win over Anderson and Maasdam, with 8-5 finals noted in the other two matchups, as Ockenfels and Houghton downed Henington and Malloy, while Neal and Swann teamed up to beat Rosenbach and Larson.
The defeat for Chillicothe drops the Hornets spring record in duals to 2-4.
In junior varsity play, four singles and six doubles matches were contested, with the Hornets beating Trenton in eight of those. Â Trenton’s wins came from Jeremy Elliott (7-6 over Zachary Blixt) and the doubles team of Weston Otto and Jeremy Elliott (6-2 over Noah Crowe/Graham Mayers). Â Otto and Elliott were defeated by Blake Winfrey and Zachary Blixt 3-6. Â
In JV singles, Weston Otto (THS) lost to Winfrey love-6, Colten Hamilton (THS) was beaten by Dallas Arnold 2-6, and Elijah Oyler (THS) took a 5-7 loss to Nicholas Duncan.
The Bulldogs teamed up Hamilton and Oyler for two JV doubles matches, both defeats, by scores of 2-6 (vs Arnold/Duncan) and 6-7 (vs. Tyler Black/Devanti Anderson). Â Reece Miller and Riley Raymo went 0-2 for Trenton in JV doubles play, falling to Seth Batye and Brendon Nelson 1-6, and Tucker Hathcock and Michael Riddle 6-7.
