The annual Schuyler County softball tournament was contested on Saturday in Queen City, with the Brookfield Lady ‘Dogs settling for second place in the eight-team field, falling to powerhouse Highland in the championship game by a score of 9-2.
Brookfield was strong in the early sections of the tournament, routing Knox County in the quarterfinal 12-0 before downing Canton in the semifinal round, 5-2.
Brookfield’s Grand River Conference rival, the Putnam County Lady Midgets, had a #5 seed in the tournament, and lost in the quarterfinal round to Monroe City by a score of 5-2. However, the Lady Midgets rebounded to claim the consolation championship, with a 16-0 win over Schuyler County and a 7-6 squeaker over Knox County.
Highland’s Lady Cougars rolled to the title, with the scores prior to the Brookfield triumph seeing a 15-0 win over Schuyler County and a 15-1 win over Monroe City.
Canton beat Scotland County in the opening round, with Knox County eliminating Scotland County in the consolation semifinals, 9-6. No result is yet available on the third-place game between Monroe City and Canton.
