The East Harrison Bobcats won the HDC Conference’s annual softball tournament with a 12-8 victory over the Gilman City Hawks on Saturday afternoon in Bethany. The tournament title is the first for East Harrison, the combined nickname for the Cainsville and Ridgeway school districts.
The tournament, down to five schools, started Saturday morning with a first-round matchup between 5th-seeded Tri-County and #4 seed Grundy R-V. The Lady Panthers emerged victorious, winning 15-8.
That result eliminated the Lady Mustangs from the tournament, while pushing Grundy R-V into a semifinal meeting with top-seeded Gilman City. That game was won by the Ladyhawks 19-4, with East Harrison, the #3 seed, swinging a mild upset of #2 seed Mercer 11-8.
In the third place game played simultaneously with the championship game, the Mercer Lady Cardinals beat the Grundy R-V Lady Panthers 14-5.
