Blue Jays come achingly close to Sedalia Tournament title, settle for runner-up honors

The Trenton American Legion Blue Jays came within one scoreless inning of winning the championship at the Sedalia Tournament, but gave up three runs in the seventh inning on Sunday, falling 9-7 to Quincy in the title game.  Trae Brownell had a spectacular weekend for the Blue Jays with both his arm and bat, but took the loss in the final, pitching one inning and allowing three runs on two hits.

In the title game, Brownell had two RBI’s, while Derek Hussey, Aaron Buford, and Lane Widner all had one hit and one RBI.

The Blue Jays advanced to the championship game on Sunday morning, shutting out Warrensburg 4-0, as Buford fired a complete-game four-hitter with nine strikeouts.  Brownell had two hits and two RBI’s, with Nick Hartley adding an RBI for Trenton.

On Saturday, Trenton won a second-round contest against Fulton by a score of 4-3, with Wyatt Thomas firing seven innings to earn the win, striking out eight batters and scattering eight hits.  Brownell had 3 of the 4 RBI’s in the Trenton win, with Buford picking up the other.

The Blue Jays opened the tournament on Friday night with a 4-0 shutout of Springfield Hillcrest.  Brownell and Buford combined for 3 RBI’s, with Widner driving in a run, and Bryce Long picking up a base hit.

Trenton is now 12-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in district play.
