Trenton High School senior halfback Jaren Whitney scored the first two times he touched the football, scoring four touchdowns in the first 6 1/2 minutes of play on Friday night, part of a five-touchdown explosion in a 48-12 Bulldog victory over Polo, on Friday night at C.F. Russell Stadium.
The first season for Whitney came just 20 seconds into the contest, as Tom Johnson had the play-by-play call:
After the Bulldog defense forced a three-and-out by Polo, the Trenton offense, after a short punt, took the football at the 44 yard line:
Whitney added a five yard scoring run with 6:19 remaining in the opening quarter, and a 13 yard score just 48 seconds later. A Polo scoring pass of 9 yards from Thompson to Fitzwater broke a month-long scoring drought for the Panthers, leaving the score 28-6 after one quarter.
Trenton opened the second quarter using misdirection to open Dalton Burchett for a 10 yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 35-6. Later in the quarter, needing a big play to get into scoring position, with less than a half-minute remaining until the break, senior quarterback Sam Schilling looked to go deep:
With the second half played mostly in “running clock”, the Bulldogs got a one-yard touchdown run by Mark Trump with 36 seconds remaining in the third quarter, with Polo’s Wyatt Segar scoring on a one yard keeper with 7:48 to go in the game, leaving the final score 48-12.
For Trenton, Whitney finished with 162 yards rushing and Trump 138, as the Bulldogs improve to 1-7 on the season, and 1-5 in GRC play. Polo is now 0-8 on the year, and 0-6 in the GRC. Trenton will play at Maysville, while Polo will host Milan, on Friday night, October 25th, to finish the regular season.
