Bills hold off Jets in AFC East battle

Josh Allen threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, and Tyler Bass kicked a go-ahead 22-yard field goal with 3:43 left, helping the Buffalo Bills overcome Aaron Rodgers’ 52-yard Hail Mary touchdown throw at halftime and beat the New York Jets 23-20 on Monday night.
The Bills (4-2) took early season control of the AFC East, snapping a two-game skid. Allen finished 19 of 25 for 215 yards.
Rodgers was 23 of 35 for 294 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Jets (2-4), who lost their third straight.
The game was marked by 22 penalties, including 11 on each team. normally reliable kicker Greg Zuerlein missed two potential go-ahead field goals for the Jets.
Bills rookie Ray Davis filled in for injured James Cook, running for 97 yards on 20 carries and catching three passes for 55 yards.
With the Jets trailing 23-20, Rodgers threw deep for Mike Williams, but Taron Johnson intercepted the pass. The Bills then ran out the clock.
Rodgers’ Hail Mary throw to Allen Lazard sent the Jets and their fans into a frenzy at halftime.
“That was a gut punch,” Allen said.
The Jets’ tumultuous week included coach Robert Saleh’s firing, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich becoming interim coach, and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett being demoted.
“It was a weird week,” Rodgers said.
The Bills host Tennessee on Sunday, while the Jets play at Pittsburgh on Sunday night.
