Baseball championships dominated by Mid-Missouri, Kansas City area schools

The high school baseball season wrapped up last week with tournaments that ran Monday through Saturday, crowning state champions in Classes 1 through 6.

The smallest schools in the state played on Monday and Tuesday in Ozark, Missouri, with the Class 1 and Class 2 event starting the festivities.

In the Class 1 semifinals, both entries from north Missouri fell in action that extended into the evening hours, with Oran defeating Northeast of Cairo 6-3, while St. Elizabeth doused Platte Valley 10-0.

Northeast defeated Platte Valley in the third place contest by a score of 9-3, with the state championship going to St. Elizabeth, 9-2 over Oran.

In the Class 2 state semifinals, Portageville shutout Gainesville 6-0, with Plattsburg falling in an eight-inning contest against Russellville 3-2.  

Plattsburg would rebound to win the third place contest over Gainesville 13-5, with the state title going to Russellville, 5-3 over Portageville.

The Class 3 and 4 tournaments were contested Wednesday into Thursday, with a pair of private Catholic schools playing for the Class 3 title, as Springfield Catholic beat Valley Park in one semifinal 11-0, with Tolton Catholic of Columbia doubling up Lawson in the evening session, 6-3.

Lawson hammered Valley Park to win the third place contest 10-3, with Tolton Catholic taking the state crown back to Mid-Missouri, downing Springfield Catholic 8-4.

Southern Boone brought a state title back to the Columbia area in Class 4, defeating Logan-Rogersville in Thursday afternoon’s title tilt 8-3.  Kennett beat Marshall in the third place game 13-3.

In Wednesday’s Class 4 semifinals, Logan-Rogersville rolled to a 11-1 win over Kennett, with Southern Boone winning an 11-inning marathon affair against Marshall 6-5.

Friday and Saturday brought the Class 5 and Class 6 tournaments, with action dominated by Kansas City area schools.

In Class 5, Platte County defeated Fort Zumwalt East in the second semifinal 5-3, with Festus taking down Willard in the opener, 4-3 in eight innings.  Platte County cruised to the title in Class 5, winning 6-1 over Willard, with the third place hardware going to Willard, 7-3 over Fort Zumwalt East.

Class 6 brought an-all Kansas City area matchup for Saturday afternoon, as in Friday’s semifinals, Blue Springs South shutout Lindbergh 2-0, and Liberty North went 10 innings to take down Francis Howell 4-3.

Liberty North won the state title over Blue Springs South in a high-scoring 11-5 contest, with Francis Howell rebounding to take third place, 11-0 over Lindbergh.
