The Chillicothe Hornets held on late to defeat the MEC rival Benton Cardinals by a final score of 5-4 on Monday afternoon. The win leaves the Hornets at 8-4 on the spring, while handing the St. Joseph “South Siders” with their second loss (11-2) of the season.
Hornet left fielder Hagan Atchison had a huge hitting day for Chillicothe, with a 4-for-4 effort, scoring twice and adding an RBI. Jack Marshall, Howie Donoho, and Koby Wagers also scored for CHS. Â
The deciding inning for Chillicothe was the home 6th, when the Hornets tallied twice to break a 3-3 tie, earning the win for Christian Still, who relieved starting pitcher Dane Ireland in the top of the 6th inning.
Diego Barron had three hits and Chris Coy two base hits in the loss for Benton.Â
