According to a person familiar with the negotiations, Ames native and University of North Carolina product Harrison Barnes has agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract to remain with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. The deal has not been officially announced by the team, but ESPN was the first to report the agreement.

The contract extension was reached just before the start of NBA free agency. Barnes, who will be entering his sixth year with the Kings, played a key role in helping the team reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006 during the past season.

In the 2020-2021 season, Barnes averaged 15.0 points per game, ranking fourth on the Kings behind De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and Kevin Huerter. He was also the only player on the Kings’ roster to appear in all 82 regular-season games, making him one of only three players in the NBA to start in at least 82 games.

Throughout his 11-year career, Barnes has averaged 14.2 points per game. He was also a member of the U.S. Olympic team that won gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
