In a game between the Chicago White Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, the White Sox rallied to win 8-7 after Cardinals’ starter Jordan Montgomery left the game with a right hamstring injury. All-Star Luis Robert Jr. hit his 26th home run of the season to tie the game for the White Sox. Nolan Arenado contributed two two-run homers for the Cardinals, giving them a 5-0 lead in the third inning and a 5-1 lead in the fifth before Montgomery’s injury.
Montgomery tapped the back of his right leg with his glove during the at-bat against Elvis Andrus, signaling his hamstring injury. He walked slowly off the mound, and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol and trainers came to the mound. JoJo Romero entered the game to get the final two outs in the fifth but gave up three runs in the sixth inning. Andre Pallante allowed two more runs, leading to the Cardinals losing their lead.
Arenado reclaimed the lead for the Cardinals with his seventh-inning homer off Keynan Middleton, but the White Sox responded in the bottom half. Kyle Leahy, who had replaced Montgomery, allowed Robert’s game-tying blast and left the game with the bases loaded. Chris Stratton took over and walked Zach Remillard, putting the White Sox ahead for good.
Jake Burger had a home run and three RBIs for the White Sox, while Remillard also had three RBIs. Kendall Graveman secured the win with a save in the ninth inning.
The White Sox acknowledged that Montgomery’s absence helped their offense, as he had been pitching well and locating his fastball effectively. Montgomery had allowed only one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings before leaving the game.
In other news, the Cardinals placed infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman on the 10-day injured list due to right wrist inflammation and recalled infielder José Fermín from Triple-A Memphis. Cardinals’ pitcher Adam Wainwright received an injection for his strained right shoulder and was placed on the 15-day injured list. Willson Contreras did not start for the Cardinals due to a dental procedure earlier in the day.
Saturday’s game will feature Miles Mikolas starting for the Cardinals, while the White Sox had not yet announced their starter.
