Trenton High School’s #1 doubles tennis team of Trent Villacampa and Bradyn Sager won three matches in Thursday’s District 15 tournament, taking the #1 doubles title and advancing to sectional round competition.
Villacampa and Sager were rarely threatened in grabbing the district title, defeating Collins and Reeter in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-1; Pitts and Mueller of Excelsior Springs in the semifinals 6-0, 6-1; and 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match against Peterson and Young of Chillicothe.
Jonin Villacampa finished in fourth place in singles competition for Trenton, shutting out Jaggars of Cameron in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-0; falling to Wohlgemuth of Carrollton in the semifinals 6-2, 6-1, and falling to Mueller of Excelsior Springs 8-5 in the third place match.
Trenton’s Horton, in singles play, lost to Terryberry of Carrollton in the opening round 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Trenton’s Otto and Markell beat Lyon and Lyon of Carrollton in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-0, before losing to Peterson and Young of Chillicothe in the semifinals 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
Advancing to the Section 8 tournament out of singles play were Zachary Dickmeier and Charles Grumke of Higginsville (District 16) and Cole Horton and Carson Kempf of Maryville (District 15).
Despite falling in the doubles title match to Trenton’s Villacampa and Sager, Chillicothe’s Gabe Peterson and Emmett Young advance to sectionals, along with the two teams in the District 16 final, Evan Heftye and Matthew Coller of Savannah, along with Kason Teale and Jaxson Staples of Maryville.
