Platte Valley used a patient and consistent hitting approach to put 11 runs on the board, in an 11-4 victory at Trenton High School on Saturday morning, spoiling the season opener for the host Lady Bulldogs.
Platte Valley, the name of the cooperative squad combining Jefferson and South Nodaway, put runs on the board for every inning between the 2nd and 7th frames, including three in the 5th and three more in the 7th to effectively end any hopes of a Trenton comeback.
Sydnee Deen had three hits, with Malia Collins, Paige West, Maggie Collins, and Stephanie Turpin all adding two for the Athletics attack. Jessica Miller pitched a complete game eight-hitter for Platte Valley, allowing four runs, three earned, with five strikeouts and no walks.
Trenton’s offense had a pair of RBI’s from Maci Moore and two hits and two RBI’s from Madi Moore. Shay Westerhof had two hits, two runs scored, and three at-bats, with Eliana Cowling adding a hit and run scored in a three-run bottom of the 7th inning. Jenna Reeter got the start and the loss for Trenton, as the Lady Bulldog defense committed four errors in the game, broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.
The Trenton JV rallied for a 5-4 win over Platte Valley, tying the contest with a single run in the bottom of the 4th inning, and winning it in the 5th, as Ella Novak drove in Jena Harris with two outs to take the win. Emma Roberts pitched five innings for Trenton, striking out six. Morgan King, Eliana Cowling, and Roberts each had two hits for the Lady Bulldogs.
In other Saturday action, Princeton opened its season with a 6-3 win at Albany.
Trenton was scheduled to play at Albany on Monday night, but that game was postponed due to wet field conditions.
