The Milan Wildcats, in action heard on KTTN FM 92.3 on Tuesday night, upended the visiting Novinger Wildcats, opening the 2016-2017 basketball season with a pair of resounding victories.
The Lady ‘Cats, behind 22 points from senior guard Kenna Michael and 12 from Evelyn Castro, rolled to a 58-35 win over Novinger. Kaffie Frederick led NHS with 10 points.
The Milan boys, supplied with a fresh supply of talent and youth, look to be poised to make a significant splash in their first season in the Grand River Conference. On Tuesday night, Andrea Dabney’s ball team dominated the second half, pulling away from the visiting Wildcats for a 60-36 victory. Senior forward Wyatt Bohle had 14 points to pace Milan, while Ryan Dabney had 12 points and Quinn Doak 11. Zane Roberts led Novinger with 14. Novinger, coming off a season-opening win over Putnam County on Monday night, drops to 1-1.
The Milan girls are seeded #4, with the Milan boys seeded #5, for next week’s Novinger Tournament. In quarterfinal play, the Lady ‘Cats will play #5 seed Atlanta on Monday night at 6:40, followed by the Milan boys against Green City at 8:00. Other Monday night quarterfinals from Novinger will be the Scotland County girls against Newtown-Harris at 4:00 and the LaPlata boys against Atlanta at 5:20.
Tuesday night quarterfinals from the Novinger High School gymnasium will match up LaPlata’s girls against Novinger at 4:00, the Scotland County boys opposite Newtown-Harris at 5:20, the Green City girls (seeded #2) against Brashear at 6:40, and the Novinger boys, seeded #3, against Brashear at 8 o’clock.
