The Trenton High School wrestlers finished 16th among 40 schools in a weekend tournament that concluded Saturday night in Sedalia. Lathrop won the tournament with 483 1/2 points, some 64 points higher than the total of the runner-up Gallatin Bulldogs. Third place Lawson was just four points (415 1/2) behind Gallatin. Marceline was fourth, Brookfield seventh, Trenton (173 1/2 points) was 16th, Hamilton 18th, Maysville tied for 24th, South Harrison was 27th, Polo 33rd, and Albany 35th.
Trenton had one champion. Senior Jadan Whitney won the 195 pound championship with a perfect 7-0 record, including four pins, a technical fall, a decision, and a sudden victory decision in the finals. That win in the final came over Knob Noster’s Steve Elwell, who went unbeaten in 2017-2018, en route to the Class 1 state championship at 182 pounds. Whitney got a takedown in overtime to win Saturday’s title.
Here is Head Coach Charlie Bacon:
Freshmen Tyler Siemer (152 pounds) finished in sixth place with a 5-3 record and Kaden Owen (145 pounds) finished with the consolation championship, finishing 5-2.
At 182 pounds, junior Mark Trump was 11th with a 3-4 record, although notable that all four losses came by three points or less.
Trenton’s wrestlers are now off until January 2019.
