Trenton’s Leininger and Soriano have season end on first day of state

Trenton High School’s doubles team of Lydia Leininger and Astrid Soriano had their season end on Friday afternoon at the Class 1 state tournament in Springfield, falling 6-0, 6-0 to Kennett High School in the opening round.

Kennett’s team came into the match with a record of 30-0.  Leininger and Soriano fell to Saxony Lutheran in the first round of consolation round action 6-1, 6-2.

Other results included Chillicothe’s Washburn and Garr falling 2 sets to 1 in first round doubles play.  Zuzanna Twarowska of Cameron won in the first round of singles competition 2 sets to 0, before falling to Emelia Kinder 2 sets to 0 in the quarterfinals.  Twarowska went onto finish sixth in Saturday’s competition.  Chillicothe’s Cami Carpenter lost to Lucy Pace 2 sets to none in first round action.

Chillicothe, having advanced to the Show-Me Showdown with a 5-3 sectional win over Excelsior Springs and a 5-3 quarterfinal triumph over Savannah, finished fourth in the Class 1 tournament, falling to eventual champion Kennett 5-1 in the semifinals, and 5-0 to Notre Dame de Sion in the third place match.  Kennett beat Clayton 5-3 in the championship duel.  In Class 2, Ladue Horton Watkins won the title match over Fort Zumwalt South 5-0, while St. Joseph’s Academy swept Columbia Rock Bridge for the Class 3 title, 5-0.
