In the Gary Haag Invitational boys wrestling tournament at Brookfield High School on Saturday, first place finishers from the local area, all in the A Division, were Drew Griffin of Marceline at 113 pounds, Peyton Parn of Brookfield at 126, Gambal Staddie of Brookfield at 132, Draven Wright of Gallatin at 144, Devan Parn of Brookfield at 175, and Trenton High School’s Sam Gibson at 190.
Gibson was 4-0 with a pair of pins, a major decision, and a regular decision. Other top THS performances from the A Pool were Brayden Hughs with a runner-up finish at 138, with a 4-1 record; and Hunter McAtee, on a day that saw him pick up career win #150, finished 4-1 for a third place finish at 144.
Trenton’s Brayden Wiggins and Logan Wilson each won both of their matches in the B Division, with Wiggins competing at 165 pounds and Wilson at 175.
Trenton Head Wrestling Coach Charlie Bacon called the Haag Invitational, as per usual, “one of the toughest” that the Bulldogs compete in:
Brookfield placed first in the team standings with 87 points. Centralia was second with 80, Marceline third with 58, Blair Oaks fourth at 56 points, with Trenton fifth at 44. The Bulldogs were followed by Holden, Penney, Gallatin, Plattsburg, the Brookfield JV, with Macon, Palmyra, and Lexington bringing up the bottom of the standings.
The girls tournament at Brookfield High School was Friday. Trenton’s Avery Clark was third at 140 pounds. Brookfield’s Lady Dogs won the team title with 186 points, while Blair Oaks and Marceline tied for second, both with 126.
On Tuesday night, Trenton was defeated in a triangular against Brookfield and Richmond, with the Brookfield Bulldogs winning 53-14, while the Spartans claimed a 48-30 triumph.
