The Trenton Lady Bulldogs traveled deep into Missouri River Valley Conference territory for Class 2, District 15 first-round volleyball district play on Monday night, facing the Carrollton Lady Trojans at Lexington High School.
The Lady Bulldogs, throughout another regular season that saw building of confidence and consistency, showed promise with being able to take numerous strong teams to three sets, only failing to get over the hump in those situations for victories.
On Monday night, Trenton trailed in the first set, and appeared to be in another situation of having to take the final two sets to grab the postseason win. However, THS rallied in spirited fashion late in the opening set, catching and passing, then beating Carrollton 25-22. With the momentum of first set fueling the Lady ‘Dogs, Trenton took the second set, 25-19, winning for the seventh time this season and advancing into Tuesday night’s district semifinals.
Karli Provorse had seven kills and Laura Carlson five for the Lady Bulldogs. Shawna Coplen had six assists and three digs, with Provorse adding three aces and three digs, Melea Farmer three aces, Carlson three digs and two assists, Grace Holcomb two digs, Allena Allen five digs, and Gilcy Ando one ace and one dig for Trenton.
The Lady Bulldogs will challenge #1 seed St. Paul Lutheran in the district semifinals at 5 o’clock this (Tuesday) afternoon in Lexington. The winner moves into the district championship match at 7 o’clock.
In the other first-round contests on Monday night, Lexington took a two sets to zero sweep over Brookfield, while Higginsville beat Penney (Hamilton) two sets to none. The Minutewomen take on the Lady Huskers at 6 o’clock tonight (Tuesday night) in the second semifinal, with the winner meeting the Trenton – St. Paul Lutheran survivor at 7 o’clock.
Lawson High School hosted first round action in Class 2, District 16 volleyball on Monday night, with East Buchanan (over Plattsburg), Bishop LeBlond (over North Platte) and Lawson (over Lathrop) taking victories. The wins for East Buchanan and LeBlond were in straight sets, with Lawson’s triumph coming in three sets. Semifinals are tonight (Tuesday night) at LHS, with top-seeded Mid-Buchanan taking on East Buchanan at 5 o’clock, followed by Bishop LeBlond battling Lawson at 6:15. The winners advance to the championship game at 7:45.
Chillicothe, the #1 seed in Class 3, District 16, enjoyed a first-round bye on Monday night for the tournament hosted by Cameron High School. Savannah beat Cameron in the opening round (25-22, 25-14), with Benton going three sets for a win opposite Maryville. In the semifinals tonight, Chillicothe will challenge Benton at 5 o’clock, with #2 seed Lafayette taking on Savannah at 6:15. The championship match is set for Wednesday night at 6 o’clock.
