Trenton tunes up for tennis postseason with Red Dragon whitewash

The Trenton Bulldogs took their second 9-0 victory in as many days, routing the Red Dragons of Wentworth Military Academy on Wednesday afternoon in Lexington.

In nine varsity matches contested (six in singles, three in doubles), Trenton won six by 8-love scores, with Nick Shields beating Collier Pickvance, Jacob Davis shutting out Deryck Gibson, Kade Ockenfels taking down Eric Duhl, Gabe Swann downing Tristan Atkinson, the team of Shields and Davis winning over Pickvance and Gibson, while Ockenfels and Houghton combined for a shutout of Duhl and Harrison.

Creed Houghton of THS won his singles match 8-1 over David Harrison, and Wyatt Neal defeated Eric Cheung 8-2.

The Trenton doubles team of Neal and Swann beat Cheung and Atkinson of WMA 8-2.

The win improves the Bulldogs season record to 8-2 (in duals), while Wentworth drops to 0-7.

In JV competition, two doubles matches were played, with Trenton’s Weston Otto and Jeremy Elliott defeating Junhe Zhang and Vince Berlett 6-1, while Colten Hamilton and Elijah Oyler took a hard-fought 7-5 win over Zhang and Berlett.

The Bulldogs outstanding season has earned the Trenton tennis program a #2 district seed, meaning a semifinal home match on Tuesday afternoon at 4. The winner of Monday’s first-round dual between the Cameron Dragons and Chillicothe Hornets will travel to take on the Bulldogs.  The Excelsior Springs Tigers own the top-seed in Class 1, District 15, and will host either Carrollton or Richmond on Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock.

Chillicothe is the #3 seed, with Cameron seeded sixth, sending the Dragons to Chillicothe on Monday afternoon (4 o’clock).  Carrollton has the 4 seed, and will host #5 seed Richmond on Monday afternoon at 4.

The Class 1, District 15 boys tennis championship match will be played on Wednesday, May 10th, also at 4 o’clock.  The district champion will move into the Class 1 “Round of 16” to play the District 16 winner in sectional round action.
