Trenton track earns runner-up status at Maryville Relays

The Trenton girls and boys track teams finished in second place, behind the champion Lawson Lady Cards and Maryville Spoofhounds, in Tuesday afternoon’s Maryville High School Relays.  The Lady Bulldogs racked up 121 points, well behind a 177 point total from Lawson boosted by a strong day in the sprints and a sweep of the relay races.  The Trenton boys, with 108 points, were only behind Maryville’s winning total of 131.  The Maryville girls were third in their own meet, with 120 points, with the St. Joseph Benton boys earning a third-place finish, with 102 points.  Other schools at the event were St. Joseph Lafayette, Savannah, Cameron, Bishop LeBlond, and St. Joseph Christian.

The Trenton girls had three winning efforts in field events, with senior Ally Ockenfels claiming the shot put crown, throwing 35 feet, 11 inches, Shayla Woodside leaping 15 feet and one quarter inch to take home the long jump title, and junior Mason Hooyman winning in the pole vault, at 8 feet, 6 inches.  Salem Croy of THS finished second in the discus, with a throw of 105 feet well behind the winning toss of 127 feet and 7 inches by Maryville’s Lauren Becker.  Maycie Mayfield of Trenton was third in the pole vault, clearing seven feet.  LeBlond’s Jaclyn Dickens won the high jump and Benton’s Daejah Bernard took the triple jump.

Lawson’s control of the meet started with the sprints, as Nikki Smith won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.  Tenna Roberts of Trenton earned a second-place finish in the 400 meter dash, in a race won by Cameron’s Khayla Hollingsworth.  Taylor Dolt of Lafayette was the 800 meter winner, with Mackenzi Stephan of Lawson winning the 1,600 and Samantha Bishop of Savannah the 3,200..

Morgan Choate of Cameron took the win in the 100 meter hurdles, with Kayley Griffin of Trenton earning a third-place finish.  Felicia Sheil of Maryville was the champion in the 300 meter hurdles.

Lawson High School won all four girls relay races.  For Trenton, the Lady Bulldogs were third in the 4 by 100 and 4 by 200 races, second in the 4 by 400, and second in the 4 by 800.

In boy’s field events, Maryville’s Elijah Green won the discus while Cameron’s Levi Marlay claimed the shot put.  Trenton freshman Jadan Whitney had a strong day, finishing runner-up in the discus and third in the shot put.  David Green of Lafayette took first in the high jump, with Avery Cooksey of Trenton second.  Trenton finished 1 and 2 in the long jump competition, with Austin Burkeybile taking the title with a leap of 19 feet, 3 3/4 inches, just 1 1/4 inches better than runner-up Travis Leeper.  Jerrod Wilkinson of Lafayette, third in the long jump, took the title in the triple jump.

In the sprints, Cooper Burton of Benton won the 100 meter dash, with Tyler Stoll of Maryville besting Trenton’s Jonathan Lamp by 0.10 seconds to win the 200 meter dash (23.24 to 23.34 seconds).  Tristan Michaelis of Cameron claimed the 400 meter race, with Wyatt Whittle of Trenton in third place.  Josh Sanders of Maryville was the 800 meter run winner, with Jack Hausman of Bishop LeBlond claiming titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter events.  Trenton’s Daniel Rodriguez was second in the 3,200.

Isiah Johnson of Benton won the 110 meter hurdles, with Spencer Morrison of Cameron the winner in the 300 hurdles race.

Trenton was third, behind runner-up Lawson and the winning Benton team, in the 4 by 800 relay.  Benton won the 4 by 100 relay, with Maryville taking the 4 by 200 title, and Lawson claiming victory in the 4 by 400 race.

Trenton’s busy track week continues on Thursday, with a trip to St. Joseph to compete in the Lafayette Irish Relays, starting at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
