The Trenton High School Bulldogs took three victories on the THS home floor on Tuesday night, with the junior varsity and varsity girls, and varsity boys grabbing triumphs over East Buchanan.
The Trenton boys played superb defense, holding a normally potent East Buch offense to just 21 points through three quarters, in a 52-42 victory that gives THS momentum going into next week’s Gallatin Invitational Tournament.
Head Coach Jeremy Austin spoke about the win on KGOZ-TV with Tom Johnson:
Only four Trenton players scored, with three of them in double figures. Spencer Harris had 17 points, Corbyn Guile 15, and Connor Cotton 13. Dylan Harris, making his first-ever varsity start for THS, had seven points.
East Buchanan was paced by 22 points from Ethan Kilgore, 19 of those in the second half.
The Trenton varsity girls showed some early season raggedness offensively, but Brian Upton’s typically tough, swarming defense was on task, as THS pulled away from East Buchanan in the second half for a 49-39 win. Ainsley Tolson scored 19 points (15 in the second half) to lead Trenton, while sophomore center Sidney Lynch had her best-ever game for THS, getting the start and scoring 13 points (11 in the first half).
Recent Pittsburg State basketball recruit Josie Fortney led East Buchanan, scoring 17 of her team’s 39 points. The game was not as close throughout much of the second half as the final score indicates, as Trenton spent much of the late stages with a lead near 20 points, before a late game run pulled the visitors from Gower a bit closer. Trenton was outscored in the final quarter by a score of 18-12 after the home team pulled away from a 22-15 halftime lead with a 15-6 advantage in the third quarter.
The Trenton teams are both highly-seeded going into the Gallatin Tournament, putting the Bulldogs into quarterfinals with Polo on Tuesday, November 29th. The top-seeded Lady Bulldogs play Polo at 4:30 that afternoon, followed by the #2 seed Trenton boys taking on Polo at 5:45.
