The Trenton Lady Bulldog softball team opened the 2021 season with five games over two days at the Cameron Tournament this past Friday and Saturday, and although THS failed to hit the win column over the weekend, the girls showed steady improvement in their play over the course of the 24-plus hours of play.
In the season opener on Friday afternoon, St. Joseph Central got the better of the Bulldogs, winning 12-0. Gracyn Rongey led the Trenton offense with two singles in three at-bats, both hard smashes up the middle of the diamond, while Eliana Cowling added a line-drive single to the Bulldog attack. Emma Roberts got the ball in the opener and struck out three Lady Indians.
In Friday’s second contest, Trenton locked themselves into the third seed in their pool, falling to Lawson by a score of 12-2. Rongey had two bunt hits for the Lady Bulldogs, with Madi Moore adding a double in three at-bats, while Teya Cooksey had a pair of base hits in as many at-bats. Freshman left-hander Avery Clark pitched and had three punch-outs for THS.
On Saturday, Trenton played three games against teams that, like THS on Friday, finished in third-place in their three-team pool. Against the DeKalb Lady Tigers, the Bulldogs did better at keeping runs off the board, but fell by a score of 5-1. Moore and Cowling had had base hits, with Jena Harris scoring the only run for THS. Emma Roberts pitched and had three strikeouts and five walks.
In Saturday’s second game, the MEC’s Benton Lady Cardinals took it to Trenton, winning 13-4. Lynch had a double and a run scored for the Lady ‘Dogs, with Cowling, Cooksey, King, Westerhof, and Harris adding hits. Clark pitched four inning and struck out four with six walks, with Jena Hunter pitching to the final batter of the game.
The Lady Bulldogs best chance at a win came late Saturday afternoon against Mid-Buchanan, with the Lady Dragons emerging with a 4-3 win. For Trenton, Lynch was 1 for 3, Mirena King 2 for 3 with a single and a triple, stolen base, run scored, and RBI. Madi Moore had an RBI, while Shay Westerhof was 1 for 3 with a single, stolen base, and run scored.
