The Trenton Lady Bulldogs went through their final tune-up for the 2017 season on Saturday, winning three games, including one against Grand River Conference rival Putnam County, in the four-team Putnam County Jamboree in Unionville.
In their first game action of the season, the Lady Bulldogs claimed a workmanlike 3-1 victory over the host Lady Midgets. Sophomore Lexi Whitaker had the biggest hit for Trenton, a triple, while juniors Salem Croy and Sidney Lynch both cracked doubles, while Taylor Richman, Jayden Roeder, and Ashten Whitaker each had singles.
THS, in their middle game, ripped Schuyler County by a final score of 5-1, scoring all five of their runs in the opening inning, an uprising only stopped by a five-run rule per half-inning Ainsley Tolson, Taylor Richman, and Mykah Hurley all had singles for Trenton, while Croy and Maci Moore had two singles apiece. From the pitching circle, Tolson allowed a leadoff homer to the Lady Rams in the first inning, but shut-down their Lewis and Clark Conference opponent from there, striking out five.
Trenton finished the day with a 2-0 shutout of the rival Brookfield Lady Bulldogs. McKayla Blackburn combined with Tolson for the 3-inning shutout, with Blackburn allowing two hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings, while Tolson twirled 1 1/3 of scoreless softball, allowing one hit and striking out three. Sara Spencer had a double, with Lexi Whitaker, Jayden Roeder, and Taylor Richman adding singles.
Trenton, a Class 2 state quarterfinalist from a season ago, along with the GRC champions in their first year as a member of the 16-team league, will open the regular season in the Cameron Tournament on Saturday, August 19th, playing the Richmond Lady Spartans in the season opener at 8 o’clock in the morning. Weather permitting, Trenton will be guaranteed four games in the Cameron event, two to start the day in pool play, with the final two in bracket play.
Trenton’s home opener, against the Maysville Wolverines on Tuesday, August 22nd, will be broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7 and KGOZ on Tune-In Radio, with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 PM at Mark Griffin Memorial Field.
