Trenton hosted Gallatin in a junior varsity basketball doubleheader on Thursday night, with the Trenton girls and Gallatin boys taking home the victories.
The Trenton JV girls continue to dominate their games, rolling out to a 29-2 halftime lead, and beating the visitors from GHS, 45-13. McKayla Blackburn led Trenton with 16 points and five steals, with Maci Moore adding 10, and Saedee Jackson eight points.
Head Coach John Cowling admitted to some first of the year “rustiness” for the Trenton Lady Bulldogs, but added “Overall this was a good game for us. I liked our defense in the first half, and we did a great job of making it hard for Gallatin to get good shots.”
While it was not a victory for the Trenton JV boys, there was noticeable improvement in their level of play, in a 34-29 final against Gallatin. The lead flip-flopped in the first quarter, with Gallatin scoring the first five points of the game, answered by a 6-0 surge by Trenton to end the quarter. Just like the first quarter, Trenton started slowly in the second quarter, falling behind by five, but responded with a run to claim a 17-15 halftime edge.
The downfall for THS came offensively in the second half, with the Bulldogs only managing six points in each quarter. Late free throws by GHS secured the five point road win for the visiting Bulldogs.
Dalton Burchett led Trenton with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Matthew Sibbit had seven points in the loss.
Boys JV coach Kameron Cool noted the increased level of play for his team, telling KTTN Sports, “We have improved in so many ways since the last time we played. This was a very positive step for our guys tonight, and I’m proud of how hard they competed.”
With Friday night’s originally scheduled JV games at Maysville called off due to Courtwarming activities for the Wolverines, the Trenton JV teams will next be in action at Hamilton, playing the Penney Hornets in a double-dip on Thursday, January 11th at 6 o’clock.
