In the boys Class 1 state tennis tournament at the Cooper Complex in Springfield, the Trenton team of Trent Villacampa and Bradyn Sager finished in eighth place in the 16-team event.
In the opening round, Villacampa and Sager lost to the Clayton High School doubles team of Anurag Venigalla and Daden Deaver by a score of 6-0, 6-1, dropping the Bulldog duo into the consolation side of the bracket.
In the first round of consolation round play on Friday afternoon, Villacampa and Sager kept their season alive with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Logan Hubbs and Gunnar Konkel of Salem High School.
That result moved the Trenton tandem into the Friday night second round of consolation round action, with Villacampa and Sager completing a grueling day with a marathon victory over Tyler Moore and Malachi Hennum of Mount Vernon High School 6-7(7-3), 7-6(8-6), 10-7.
In Saturday’s 7th place match, Moberly’s Ryan O’Laughlin and Maxwell Meystrik downed Villacampa and Sager, 6-1, 3-6, 10-4.
The state championships in Class 1 went to Savannah’s Evan Heftye and Noah Gould in doubles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) over Arnav Poddar and Ismael Robles-Razzaq of Clayton.
The singles championship went to Daniel Radke of Whitfield High School, via a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 win over Cole Horton of Savannah.
