The Trenton Blue Jays defeated Hannibal in the first round of District 2 American Legion baseball play on Wednesday night, 4-3, advancing to a semifinal with Moberly on Friday night at Burleigh Grimes Field.
In the opening round win, the Blue Jays were tested early by Hannibal, with the visitors putting up runs in the 3rd and 5th innings for a 2-0 lead. Winning pitcher Trae Brownell kept Trenton in the game by holding Hannibal to just the two runs in seven innings of work, allowing only three hits, and striking out five batters.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Blue Jays hit the decisive blows of the game, scoring four times. Hadley Williams, Lane Widner, an Tristan Sewell drove in runs, while Derek Hussey, Brownell, and Wyatt Thomas had two hits each in the game. Thomas pitched the 8th and 9th innings for Trenton, allowing an 8th inning run but nothing more, earning the save while scattering three hits.
Friday night’s semifinal with Moberly, at Trenton’s Burleigh Grimes Field, will start at 7 o’clock.
