The Trenton Bulldogs cemented their place on top of the Grand River Conference’s eastern division standings with a dominating 71-46 win over the visiting South Harrison Bulldogs on Wednesday night.
Trenton, with the win, improves to 7-0 in the GRC East, taking the divisional title by one game over runner-up Putnam County, whom the Bulldogs beat in head-to-head action on Tuesday night.
Trenton opened Wednesday’s game with a 23-10 advantage after the first quarter of play, led 36-23 at the half, and extended the lead to 52-34 after three quarters. Connor Cotton had an efficient 22 point night for the Bulldogs, while Spencer Harris added 21, and Lathan Croy 12.
South Harrison finishes GRC East play at 3-4, locked in a four-way tie for third place (with Maysville, Gallatin, and Milan). With tie-breakers put into the decision, Maysville earns the #3 seed for Friday night’s cross-over game, with Gallatin at #4, Milan at the 5 seed, and South Harrison 6.
The Trenton Lady Bulldogs played without two key starters on Wednesday night, as sophomore Salem Croy missed her third straight game and was joined on the injured list by senior Whitley Richman. Croy, in the more serious of the injuries involved, suffered a ‘significant’ ankle turn against East Buchanan on Thursday, January 26th, while Richman turned her ankle in the first quarter of Tuesday night’s victory at Putnam County. There is no official word on either player’s availability for Friday night’s GRC championship game against the Stanberry Lady Bulldogs.
With two fellow starters ailing, sophomore guard Ainsley Tolson picked up the scoring slack in a 51-41 Trenton win, putting in 21 points against South Harrison. Mykah Hurley and Ashten Whitaker both scored eight points. South Harrison’s girls drop to 4-3 in the GRC East, tied with Putnam County and Princeton in the third spot. South Harrison won the tie-breaker for the #3 seed, while Putnam County slides to 4, with Princeton at 5.
In addition to South Harrison at Trenton, Maysville hosted Milan on Wednesday night, as both doubleheaders were make-up dates from games postponed by icy conditions on December 16th. The Lady ‘Cats claimed a 55-46 win against the Lady Wolverines, but the Milan boys late January slide continued into the first night of February, as Maysville won the night-cap, 46-36.
