The Trenton Bulldogs downed the Chillicothe Hornets on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 5-3 to win the Class 1, District 15 boys tennis championship. The win advances THS into the state sectional round on Monday afternoon, where the Bulldogs will play District 16 champion Maryville, with the winner advancing into the quarterfinals to battle either Lafayette County or St. Pius X on Tuesday.
Other Class 1 sectional matchups on Monday will include Bolivar against the District 10 champion, Forsyth against Logan-Rogersville, Osage opposite the District 7 champ, Lutheran South against the District 1 champion, STEAM Academy against the District 6 champion, with a matchup between the yet to be decided District 3 and 4 champions.
The state semifinals will be Saturday, May 25th at 9 AM, with the Class 1 state championship on the same day at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, with that day’s action at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.
Against Chillicothe, five of the six singles matchups were played, with Trenton winning four of the five completed matches. In the #1 singles match, Trenton’s Bradyn Sager defeated Jadon Collins of Chillicothe 6-4, 6-1. Isaac Dixon won the #3 singles match in dominant fashion over Anthony Trantham 6-0, 6-1, with Jacob White winning at #4 singles, 7-5, 7-5 over Andrew Snider, and Henry Lasley winning at #6 singles, 6-4, 6-4 over Austin Lyford. Chillicothe’s only singles win came from Joshua Adams, 6-3, 6-1 over Victor Markell. The #5 match between Elijah Carpenter of the Hornets and Jake Horton of the Bulldogs was not completed.
In doubles, Chillicothe won a pair of closely contested matches, with Collins and Adams defeating Sager and Markell 9-7 in the #1 match, Carpenter teaming with Quincy Swearingen for an 8-6 victory in the #3 match over Horton and Lasley. Trenton doubles picked up an important win in the #2 match, with Dixon and White defeating Trantham and Snider 8-3.
In Monday night’s semifinal round, Trenton rolled to a 5-1 win over the Cameron Dragons, with Sager winning 6-0, 6-0 over Riley Ragan, Victor Markell defeating Grant Neal 6-0, 7-5, and Dixon defeating Ethan Turner 6-1, 6-0. Three singles matches were not completed.
In doubles, Cameron’s #3 entry of Kaden Getman and Adam Autry defeated Horton and Lasley 8-4. In #1 doubles, Trenton’s Sager and Markell defeated Ragan and Turner 8-1. Cameron’s season ends at 0-15. The double team wins have the Trenton Bulldogs going into the postseason with a mark of 11-4.
