In high school football state championship games on Saturday at Faurot Field in Columbia, Monroe City won the Class 1 title over Valle Catholic, 12-7. All three touchdowns were scored via the ground. The Warriors scored in the first quarter. The Panthers got their two touchdowns in the second and third quarters. Monroe City, runner-up in Class 1 last season, finishes the year at 15-0, with Valle Catholic at 13-2.
Maryville pounded Mount Vernon 47-8 in the Class 3 title matchup. Maryville led at halftime 40-0. The Spoofhounds had 407 offensive years, 372 of them rushing. Maryville scored six touchdowns on the ground and also had a 26 yard “pick 6” for a score. Mount Vernon was held to 168 offensive yards, most of them passing.
Kansas City Staley won the Class 5 championship over Pattonville in a wild finish. The final score was 36-35. Pattonville went ahead 25-28 with 0:57 left in the 4th quarter on a 20-yard scoring strike and successful extra point kick, capping an eight-play, 81 yard drive.
Staley then score on a nine yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion pass with 0:09 remaining to give the Falcons the second state title in the 10-year history of the North Kansas City school. Staley’s game-winning drive covered 72 yards in six plays.
