The St. Pius X Warriors, in a battle of district champions, won at Trenton High School against the Bulldogs 5-2 in a Class 1 boys tennis sectional on Tuesday afternoon.
In action from the Carpenter-Bosley Courts at THS, the Warriors won a pair of close duels to extend their advantage and give the Kansas City visitors some breathing room. In a come-from-behind effort, #5 singles player Adam Champagne lost in the opening set to Trenton’s Victor Markell 6-4, but stormed back, taking the second set via 7-6 tiebreaker, with Champagne dominating the tiebreak, winning 7-0. The third set went to Champagne 10-3.
The #1 doubles match also proved to be important in Pius’ team victory, as Justin Janasz and Jackson Osten of the Warriors outlasted Trenton’s state tournament qualifying doubles entry of Trent Villacampa and Bradyn Sager, winning 9-7.
Other St. Pius X victories came in a #1 singles sweep (6-0, 6-0) for Janasz over Villacampa, a #3 singles win for Ryan King over Maverick Sole 6-3, 7-5, and a #2 doubles triumph for Clark Shields and Ryan King over Maverick Sole and Tucker Otto 8-2.
Trenton’s victories came from #6 singles entry Isaac Dixon, via 6-4, 6-2 straight set fashion over Christian Warner, and the #3 doubles team of Dixon and Markell, by 8-0 sweep over Champagne and Warner.
Trenton ends the team portion of its season with a mark of 14-3, with St. Pius X improving to 13-2.
At the same time of the Trenton-Pius sectional battle, the Savannah Savages battled Warrensburg at Trenton High School, with Savannah scraping out a 5-4 win. In the Class 1 quarterfinals late Tuesday afternoon, Savannah rolled past St. Pius X, winning 5-0 and earning a spot in the state semifinals on Friday, May 26th. Savannah will play Clayton with Bolivar battling Duchesne at noon on the 26th, with the third place and championship matches at noon on Saturday, May 27th.
