The #1 seed in the Western Conference, Sporting Kansas City, will open Major League Soccer postseason play on Sunday afternoon, hosting the 8th-seeded San Jose Earthquakes at 3 o’clock at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
The quarterfinal contest will be held with capacity set at 18% due to COVID-19 concerns. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1 and the FOX Sports app.
The MLS playoffs should be dramatic, with a single-elimination format being utilized. Kansas City, courtesy of the #1 seed, will have home field advantage for as long as they keep winning. The San Jose/Kansas City winner advances to the Western Conference semifinals to battle either #4 seed Minnesota United FC or the #5 seed Colorado Rapids on December 1st or 2nd.
Kansas City has been the MLS postseason for 9 times over the past 10 years, including a MLS Cup title in 2013. San Jose returns to postseason play for the first time since 2017.
