Sporting Kansas City will travel to Houston, Texas to play the Dynamo on Wednesday, June 29th at 7:30 PM, announced Thursday by U.S. Soccer. The match will be a second-round affair in the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. The match will be played at BBVA Compass Stadium.
The second round was announced on Thursday, in addition to potential pairings in the quarterfinal round, and host scenarios for those games. Should Sporting win in Houston, Kansas City would be guaranteed a home date with either FC Dallas or Colorado in the tournament quarterfinals. That game, from Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, would be played on either July 19th or 20th.
Sporting KC is in the “Plains” region of the tournament bracket, along with Colorado, Dallas, and Houston. Of the 16 teams remaining in the field, 14 reside in Major League Soccer (MLS). The New York Cosmos and Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the NASL represent the remaining two teams.
Houston advanced to its meeting with Kansas City by rolling San Antonio FC on Wednesday night by a score of 4-0. Kansas City survived in extra time, winning at Minnesota United FC on Wednesday night 2-1 courtesy of a late winner from Diego Rubio. Sporting KC has won the U.S. Open Cup three times previously, including a season ago (2015).
The last time Houston and Kansas City met, the Dynamo emerged with a 2-0 victory, on Houston’s home turf, on Saturday, May 7th.
