Eight teams, seven from the Grand River Conference along with nearby HDC rival Mercer, were in Princeton on Saturday, for the George Scurlock Memorial Softball Tournament, played at Franklin Field and Gentry Field, with all teams in the tourney playing three contests.
The South Harrison Lady Bulldogs, continuing their resurgent season, locked up in a high-scoring championship duel with GRC rival Polo, outlasting the Lady Panthers in a mild upset, with the #2 seed taking down the top seed, 11-10 in eight innings. The result from the final continued a trend that saw the two teams light up the scoreboard, as South Harrison shutout Mercer in the quarterfinal round 10-0, then beat Princeton in the semifinals by an identical 10-0 score.
Trenton will take note of South Harrison’s success, with THS slated to play the girls from Bethany in a district quarterfinal game on Wednesday night at 7 o’clock in Marceline. Trenton started Saturday’s tournament strong, with a 7-2 win over Milan, but the Lady Bulldogs slumped in the semifinal round, falling to Polo by a tally of 15-0. Trenton lost to Princeton in the third place contest 12-3.
Other quarterfinal results from Saturday morning were Polo over Pattonsburg, 21-6, while Princeton downed Gallatin 8-3. In the consolation semifinals, Milan picked up a 9-2 win over Pattonsburg, while Gallatin cruised past Mercer 10-2.
Milan doubled up Gallatin to win the consolation hardware by a score of 6-3, with Mercer salvaging a win and a 7th place finish, defeating Pattonsburg 14-9.
