The Grand River Conference champion South Harrison Lady Bulldogs, playing in the Class 2, District 6 championship game on Monday night, led two-time defending state champion Marceline 8-1 going into the top of the 7th inning, having the win seemingly under control.
However, Marceline had plenty of fight left, as the Lady Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate in the contest at Trenton High School’s Mark Griffin Field, scoring seven runs to stun South Harrison and tie the contest at 8-8. Lucy Moseley had two base hits in the Tiger uprising, including a game-tying single.
In the bottom of the 7th, needing just one run to secure the victory, South Harrison’s Lexi Hunter had a leadoff single. Leaning on the swift running style of Hunter, the Lady Bulldogs had a steal of second base followed immediately by a steal of third. On the throw to third base, the ball deflected into short left field, scoring the game-winning tally.
South Harrison, improving to 24-6, will travel to Bowling Green on Saturday to play in the Class 2 state quarterfinal round. Bowling Green won District 5 over Highland 8-4.
In the District 7 championship game, Mid-Buchanan downed North Platte 6-4, with the Dragons set to host Carrollton in a Saturday quarterfinal, as the Lady Trojans shutout Sherwood in District 8 2-0.
Iberia won District 2 over Eugene 7-1 and Chaffee beat Neelyville in District 1 6-1, sending Eugene to Chaffee on Saturday.
