The South Harrison Lady Bulldogs, powered by a leadoff sixth inning homer by Bailey Barnett, rallied for four runs in the sixth inning and overtake and beat Trenton 5-2 in Grand River Conference softball action on Tuesday night.
The win keeps SHHS (9-2, 4-0) in the top spot in the GRC, while harming Trenton’s (6-3, 2-2) chances of competing for a regular season championship. Senior right-hander Hannah Carter scattered eight hits in earning the win from the pitching circle, striking out seven batters in the process.
The visitors from Bethany opened the scoring in the first inning, with a Saige Bennett bloop single followed by a stolen base, and an RBI single by Barnett.
Trenton, showing good ability to connect on Carter’s pitches early, struck in the bottom of the 3rd inning, as Kaylor Hodge, Mirena King, and Jena Harris cracked back-to-back singles, with Harris’ base hit scoring Hodge. One inning later, Avery Clark smashed a one-out double to the left-center field wall, followed by a single to center by Ella Novak that scored Clark, who barely beat the tag by Lady Bulldog catcher Lexi Hunter.
Barnett’s game-tying homer came on the first pitch of the 6th inning. After a fly ball out to left, South Harrison’s Kenley Burkhead reached via error, followed by a double by Megan Norris, and singles by Emma Chamberlin to push the lead to 5-2.
Trenton had hits from Madi Moore and Kaylor Hodge over the final two innings, but both were stranded on the base paths.
